But first, a little background.
A couple weeks ago, my brother and I were driving from LA to Albuquerque, NM to take him back to college. We were taking his '97 Toyota Camry V6 (powwwaaaaahhhhhhh!!!!!!!!)
We made it across Arizona averaging about 80. We topped speeds that I didn't even think were possible in that car (in a safe manor, as it was keeping with the flow of traffic, which included an X5 passing us at probably 105).
We made it across with no problems at all with the police, with the car or with my brother and I. When we got into New Mexico, it seemed like it would be the same smooth sailing. At first it was. We were averaging about 80 for most of the distance across NM (unless my brother was driving, when it would be 75, the legal limit). He was driving the very last leg of the journey into the city. We are oh so close and very optimistic at this point. We can SEE the city a few miles ahead of us!
And then a Charger police car pulls on behind us and he lights up like a christmas tree. (A bit more explanation here as well, we were in a group of four cars, all going the same speed, but we believe we were singled out because of having CA plates.)
So we pull over to the side of the freeway and my brother is freaking out.
I said, "Just relax, be polite, take out the keys and put them on the dash"
He took the keys out and calmed down a bit as well.
We were very polite when the officer came up to the window.
"Do you know why I stopped you?"
"To be honest, no," my brother said, because we really didn't have a clue! We were doing the legal limit, so we thought.
"This is a construction zone. You were doing 75 when you should have been doing 55"
Then, the pleading. "I am so sorry officer, we didn't notice and were keeping with the flow of traffic, we've been driving all day..." Etc etc etc.
He walked back to his car and writes the ticket anyways.
But wait, there's more!
When he hands us the ticket, it says Laguna Tribal Police on the top.
He says, "Since I'm a tribal officer, this won't count on your insurance or your license." Which was a huge relief because 20 over would be a killer on insurance. Then, things got better (or less bad anyways). When we looked at the ticket, it was only for $80. In LA that would have been at least $300. So it sucked to get pulled over when we could taste freedom, but at least the ticket itself wasn't bad. And the Charger police car looked epic with all 30something of its lights on.
So TL;DR
The Bad: We got a ticket.
The Good: Only $80, no points on the license, no effect on insurance.
Oh, and to add an appropriate ending, the first thing he did once he was settled in the state was go to the DMV and get NM plates.

That definitely was good and bad.

Look at it this way: the things that were bad were outweighed by the things that were good.

I wouldn't pay it. Just go gamble some of your money away in the local casino. Practically the same thing.

Haha, we'd rather not as well, and because they are tribal police, they can't come after you out of their jurisdiction, but on the off chance we ever do set foot in Laguna again, he paid it just in case.

Laguna cops are well known to prowl the interstates and hand out as many tickets as they can. Like having 2 casinos along I-40 doesn't generate enough money.
I live in Rio Rancho.

And I figured out an even more appropriate title.
